WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Not All Black Mold Is the Same
The term "black mold" is commonly used to refer to Stachybotrys chartarum, the species associated with mycotoxin production and serious health effects. But many other mold species appear black or dark green — and only laboratory testing can confirm which species you're dealing with.
This is one of the most important reasons to get an independent assessment before calling a remediator. Your industrial hygienist's report will identify the species present, the extent of contamination, and the specific remediation protocol required.
Do not disturb suspected black mold without proper containment. Disturbing mold without negative air pressure containment releases spores and can spread contamination to unaffected areas of your home.
HOW WE WORK
Our Black Mold Remediation Process
Protocol Review
We review your industrial hygienist's written protocol in full before arriving. We come prepared with the right containment materials, PPE, and equipment for the specific scope.
Containment Setup
We establish negative air pressure containment zones using 6-mil poly barriers. This prevents cross-contamination of unaffected areas during removal.
Safe Material Removal
Contaminated porous materials — drywall, insulation, wood framing — are removed per protocol, double-bagged, and disposed of per EPA guidelines.
HEPA Vacuuming & Treatment
All affected surfaces are HEPA-vacuumed and treated with EPA-registered antimicrobial agents. Air scrubbers run continuously throughout the process.
Documentation
We photograph every stage and provide a written completion report. This documentation is essential for insurance claims and future property transactions.
Independent Clearance
Your industrial hygienist returns to perform clearance testing — air and surface sampling to confirm remediation success. We do not sign off on our own work.
Remediation-Only Means No Conflict of Interest
With black mold, the stakes are high — and so is the potential for a company to exaggerate scope. A company that both tests and remediates has a direct financial incentive to find more mold. More mold found = more remediation revenue.
We perform only remediation. Your assessor defines the scope. We execute it. We have no financial stake in what your assessor finds — which means you can trust that the work we do is the work that actually needs to be done.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Black Mold Removal FAQ
How do I know if I have toxic black mold (Stachybotrys)?
You don't — not from appearance alone. Stachybotrys is slimy and dark, but so are several other common mold species. The only way to confirm the species is through laboratory testing by an independent mold inspector or industrial hygienist. This is why we require a written assessment before we begin any remediation work.
Is black mold always dangerous?
Not all black-colored mold is Stachybotrys chartarum, which is the species associated with mycotoxin production. Many common molds appear black — Cladosporium, Aspergillus niger, and others — and while they can cause allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, they are different from "toxic black mold." Any significant mold growth warrants professional assessment and remediation, regardless of species.
Can I remove black mold myself?
For small areas of surface mold on non-porous materials (tile, glass), DIY cleaning may be appropriate. For any mold that has penetrated porous materials — drywall, wood, insulation — or any mold covering more than 10 square feet, the EPA recommends professional remediation. Disturbing black mold without proper containment releases spores and can spread contamination throughout your home.
Do I need a mold test before calling you?
Yes. We are a remediation-only company. We require a written mold assessment and remediation protocol from an independent, unaffiliated mold inspector or industrial hygienist before we can begin work. This protects you from conflicts of interest — the same company should never test and remediate. We can refer you to independent inspectors in the Tulsa area.
How long does black mold remediation take?
Depending on the scope defined in your protocol: small contained areas (1 room, under 10 sq ft) typically take 1 day. Moderate contamination (crawl space, multiple rooms) takes 2–4 days. Extensive contamination may take a week or more. Your IH protocol will specify the scope, and we'll give you a timeline before work begins.
Will my insurance cover black mold removal?
Possibly. Insurance typically covers mold remediation when it results from a sudden, covered water event (burst pipe, appliance failure). It generally does not cover mold from long-term moisture accumulation or neglect. Your IH report is critical documentation for any insurance claim — it establishes the scope, cause, and professional basis for the remediation.
